The Blind Side

People do really have a blind side. I can't understand how a film like Blind Side with such an excellent plot and moral has been shadowed by a morally empty film of blood-suckers (not to be named).

I don't exactly hate the not-to-be-named film. I enjoyed the first installation of the blood-suckers' saga. Well, not because of the story but because of the effects and sounds. Just because I enjoyed it doesn't mean I liked it. Like a puff of smoke, the enjoyment I experienced vanished.

Enter the blood-sucker's saga's second installation. Saw the trailer and it looked exciting with all the chasings and transformation effects of the blood suckers' enemy: werewolves. Sure the effects and action-packed scenes are great but what exactly are exciting scenes without a story? Useless scenes, aren't they? Useless scenes combined together equates a useless film. To quote a friend's friend, "...it was a lame story about an obsessed, self-abusing girlfriend who can't get over her boyfriend leaving her."

Fans of the blood-suckers' film will likely argue that their movie is different from The Blind Side. Well, it really is! The Blind Side may not have the action packed scenes and effects but it does have a cleverly weaved story that is real, morally rich, and excellently performed.

Sore Eyes and a Sore Heart

Early this morning, I had the feeling that my eyes aren't well. I am a person for alternative medicine and so I was looking for natural ways to relieve my eyes. We had no more teabags so I thought I'd watch a movie that'd make me cry but I couldn't find one that would. As you might know, tears are the most natural cleansing agent for the eyes.

Arriving home tonight from my tutoring I borrowed my mom's menthol stick. I rubbed it around my eyes while checking emails. It didn't work immediately though. It did work after I read news about Doulos's destiny.

Yes, Doulos. The ship that I've loved more than any other. The ship that many has loved because of the love that flowed from it. The loveliest and oldest sailing ship will cease its sailing after December 31, 2009.

The email came from the OM Director of Australia. It must have been causing sadness to many hearts tonight but some things must come to an end and Doulos is just one of those things. I guess I never expected that it must come so soon.

But for all the sadness that it's causing I still praise God that even for a very short time He has allowed me to serve in the ship. It was one of the most wonderful moments in my life. One of those little jaded treasures that you would never trade even for tons of gold.

Here's a passage that the OM Director found comfort in and I thank him for sharing it. If you've known Doulos, I hope the following passages would also give you comfort.

 Isaiah 46: 9 – 11
9 Remember the former things, those of long ago;
       I am God, and there is no other;
I am God, and there is none like me.
10 I make known the end from the beginning,
from ancient times, what is still to come.
I say: My purpose will stand,
and I will do all that I please.
 11 From the east I summon a bird of prey;
from a far-off land, a man to fulfil my purpose.
       What I have said, that will I bring about;
what I have planned, that will I do.

God is sovereign. He gives and He takes. And it's all for His glory. Doulos must come and she must go too. And it's all for His glory.

World Vision Volunteers' Appreciation Night

Girls can read this. Guys don’t. You won’t understand. Well, if you do, then it’s nice to know that you understand.

With the recent typhoons ravaging different places in the country, World Vision was actively involved in the relief operations (and still is). Tonight was the time to give appreciation to volunteers. True Love Waits was able to get a booth outside the auditorium to promote our cause.

I was only expecting to man the True Love Waits booth and help give away stickers and fliers but this became a night full of surprises. It all began when JC (a TLW volunteer) told us that he’d be leaving Monday for Canada for good. This was the last night he’s going to volunteer with us. Well, that is really sad because JC is one of the resident jokers of TLW. We’ll surely miss him.

We gave out fliers and asked questions about purity. That way we educated people of what True Love Waits stands for. I can’t believe that I would actually meet people (some of them Christians) who are okay with homosexuality. I thank God that through our booth we were able to share the truth about homosexuality in the light of His Word.

One of the parts I liked in manning the booth was the food. I love eating and I made sure I ate what was served. Haha. I didn’t have seconds though.

We were so occupied in the booth but went in the auditorium later to support Ahava--the band that works with True Love Waits. Their songs are really written well for a specific audience. If God wills it, I hope they’ll be able to release an album in the market. Anyway, so there we were supporting Ahava. I went out after they performed but was pulled in again because Gab Valenciano was there.

I’m not actually a fan of Gab but then it’s great to see him dance. Actually, this is the first time ever that I saw him dance apart from a commercial of his with his dad. Man, I bet he doesn’t have bones.

After him was Acel, who performed Torete. Among her back-up instrumentalists was Teacher Liza, my violin teacher!

Then after Acel… well here it goes… Sam Concepcion was there!!! And it’s his birthday too! *inward uproar of shrieks* Okay, okay, I used to have huge crush (I don’t like the word ‘crush’ but then I don’t know what word to use) on him. Guys, don’t read on. You won’t understand what I’ll say.

I’d say he’s really a good performer.  Well, you bet I was taking pictures and then I started deleting some bad quality photos from my camera because my memory card was running out of space. Just as I finished deleting, I looked up on the stage and did not find him there! Instead, he was right in front of me singing and going around making the audience sing with him. I was stupefied and horrified. Stupefied because I never thought I’d see him that close; horrified because he might just put the mic on me. Well, at least the latter didn’t happen.

After he performed I went to the back and looked for my fellow TLW volunteers. I was shrieking inside and I had to vent it out on some people I know who would understand.  The farthest I could go was grin, grin and grin. :D

After coming out, Kuya Franco, our national training coordinator (who saw me grinning like a Cheshire cat) told us that we could meet Sam. I was like, “No.. no it’s fine. I already saw him. That’d be enough.” But Kuya Franco stood up and motioned me and Hannah to follow him. I was shrieking inside while walking to the backstage room. Where did Kuya Franco get all this confidence to talk to people he doesn’t personally know?!!

Finally we were in the backstage room. And there was Sam. We were introduced and then we got into little chats. He’s a very conversational young man. It’s like he’s just part of our church’s youth group with the way he talks. And you know what? He is interested in True Love Waits. I mean, he has read a book of it that was used in their camp so he’s familiar with it. I hope and pray that he’d be an advocate of True Love Waits. I mean, he would be really an effective ambassador of purity.

Of course we took pictures with him afterwards. I never thought this would actually happen! But there, it happened already and I am blogging about it. ;) Talk about surprises and meeting a former crush! Haha!

One thing I regret though was I wasn’t able to tell him about Do Hard Things. My faulty brain was whirling then and I now hate myself for forgetting to tell him about Do Hard Things! Well, I have a feeling that we will meet again if ever he comes to the office to help TLW. And I’ll make sure then that Do Hard Things will be the first thing I’ll talk about with him.

Well, that’s all for the night. I’m not sure though when this plastered smile on my face will vanish. This is such a girly post! Am I not a mixed martial arts green belter?! What a shameful girly talk! See guys, you would never understand.

The Day Before You

I could say that Matthew West is one of the best musicians there is. I seem to like all his songs. Last week Ate Ami was playing Matthew West songs in the office and told us about The Day Before You--which she thought was a worship song at first.

I found this nice (and only) video of Matthew West singing The Day Before You. Well this is not really just a video. Great and sweet story behind it...

KLMguitars: With thanks to Joel West, I was able to go backstage with my girlfriend (now fiancé) propose to her and then meet Matthew West as he sang "our song" especially for us! She had no clue it was coming. It was an absolutely amazing evening one that will be told until the day I die. Thanks so Much Matthew and Joel.

While looking through YouTube, I realized that it's Rascal Flatts who got the song popularized. Well, I like both versions but I think Matthew West gets the higher score for me since he wrote the song. To equalize, I guess Matthew West's version is good to listen to if you're on your way to sleep and Rascal Flatt's when you wake up in the morning.

Coincidence? Not likely...

FB chat is always offline for me when I go to Facebook. But tonight, my sister asked me to go offline to see if her classmate is online. I didn't like it because I have no plan of staying long in Facebook and to get caught up in chat is the last thing I wanted tonight. My sister told me that I could go offline right after she's seen who's in my online list. But after scanning the online list, a part of me didn't want to go offline. Perhaps, I want to chat with whoever will pop up. I haven't chatted for a long time and so I gave way.

In a short while there were two pop-ups. Those were my college classmates. It's great to keep in touch with them and to see where they are going. Encouraging them in starting small in their chosen career is the best thing I can do for them. After sometime too, the OM Philippines director popped up. Here's our short chat:
Jun
hi christin
good evening...
9:05pmChristin
Hello Brother Jun! Good evening din po! :):)
9:07pmChristin
Kamusta na po yung mga pupunta ng Logos Hope? Have they gone to the ship na po ba? September na po kasi di ba.
9:08pmJun
one left for Logos Hope the other week. another left for doulos last tuesday
a family is set to join doulos in october...
9:08pmChristin
Wow! :):) For two years po uli kayo sa Doulos? God bless po!
9:10pmJun
hindi po kami. ibang family po.
9:11pmChristin
A family.. sorry di ko po nabasa ng maayos. "A" family po pala. :):) Kala ko "my" family po sabi nyo.
9:12pmJun
haha ok lang. sana prophecy yan hahaha. di pa po ngayon kasi malaki na mga boys namin. di na cover sa school on board.
9:18pmChristin
Magandang prophecy po yan. :):)
9:18pmJun
haha paunahin muna kita...
9:18pmChristin
Meron po ba kayong guidelines like list po of requirements (besides what you texted) for STEP?
Hehe... maganda din pong prophecy yan. ;);)
9:19pmJun
yes. i will email you the list.
9:21pmJun
sige. good night na and greetings to everyone in the church.
9:22pmChristin
Good night din po! :):)
Thank you po.
9:22pmJun
thanks din...:)
I don't know about you but this chat gave me hope and it served as a sign. For the past months I haven't really been progressing on my desire to enter STEP (Short Term Exposure Program) in Doulos. I've been studying my heart. I don't want to go to Doulos just because I want to. I want to go because I want to go and the Lord wants me to go. Hearing the OM Director himself say that he wants me to go is a very encouraging thought. That would be very exciting if I could go... besides my passport is on the way in a few weeks' time. We'll see what path God wants me to take...

Another chat incident was right after the OM Director finished our chat. This time it came from a neighbor. She asked me if I could tutor her son on weekends. I was a bit taken aback since I'm in my half-year gap and I'm not keen on getting employment except for volunteer works. Something in me said yes but I still have to talk to my mom about it. Well, I would know her answer but still it's different when your parents know what steps you are taking in your life. No matter how little.

Another incident is off chat but well it happened today. It's a writing offer in True Love Waits. I'm really excited about it since it's going to be more than volunteer work as the TLW director told me.  Nothing specific yet but I'll see where the Lord will lead this. Well... those are all the incidents for today. The Lord is Jehovah-Rapha!

Drenched In Cheddar and Sprinkled With Parmesan

In the wee hours of the morning I was backing up files. I was getting so sleepy and a bit unoccupied. I needed to do something. Like, I wanted to laugh. So I Googled the famous Pinoy cheesy lines to see if it can make me laugh. It did.

Bothers Evolving to Distractions

I have not been on Facebook for a week now. That's because I deactivated it. Much to the surprise of many because they never expected that I would do such a thing especially I'm a Facebook fan.

One of the prime reasons is the video I'm making but well there are other contributing factors that made me really decide to deactivate Facebook. It isn't the Playfish applications. Restaurant City and Pet Society are pretty controllable things to me. Quizzes aren't much of the factors since I don't take quizzes a lot. And so what is it?

Well for more than a year now there has been something in Facebook that frequently bothers me. It comes and goes away--but doesn't go that far to lose its way from coming back. For a year now the bother has become quite stable but then again just more than a month ago another bother came and joined the older one. Ah, this one is afresh and isn't likely to go away so soon. And that's bothering. Distracting.

So I had to leave Facebook.

My leave is temporary though. Perhaps once the video is done I'll get back to Facebook. I can't bear that all the photos I've shared to friends who don't have cameras will be gone. Most of them are missionaries who have scarce Internet connection. The photos I took are the only ones they can share to their folks back home. *sigh* If it weren't for them I would never go back to Facebook again.
