A Friendship Written In Tales

In the midst of editing a video I took a break and read some lines from a book that tore me up. I swallowed quickly to keep my tears from falling. Anyone who knows what genuine friendship is and treasures it deeply would know what this is all about.

“The brave things in the old tales and songs, Mr. Frodo: adventures, as I used to call them. I used to think that they were things the wonderful folk of the stories went out and looked for, because they wanted them, because they were exciting and life was a bit dull, a kind of a sport, as you might say.
But that’s not the way of it with the tales that really mattered, or the ones that stay in the mind. Folk seem to have been just landed in them, usually---their paths were laid that way, as you put it. But I expect they had lots of chances, like us, of turning back, only they didn’t. And if they had, we shouldn’t know, because they’d have been forgotten. We hear about those as just went on---and not all to a good end, mind you; at least not to what folk inside a story and not outside it call a good end. You know, coming home, and finding things all right, though not quite the same---like old Mr. Bilbo. But those aren’t always the best tales to hear, though they may be the best tales to get landed in! I wonder what sort of a tale we’ve fallen into?”

“I wonder,” said Frodo. “But I don’t know. And that’s the way of a real tale. Take any one that you’re fond of. You may know, or guess, what kind of a tale it is, happy-ending or sad-ending, but the people in it don’t know. And you don’t want them to.” …

“I wonder if we shall ever be put into songs or tales. We’re in one, of course; but I mean: put into words, you know, told by the fireside, or read out of a great big book with red and black letters, years and years afterwards. And people will say: ‘Let’s hear about Frodo and the Ring!’ And they’ll say: ‘Yes, that’s one of my favorite stories. Frodo was very brave, wasn’t he, dad?’ ‘Yes, my boy, the famousest of the hobbits, and that’s saying a lot.’” …

“Why, Sam,” Frodo said, “to hear you somehow makes me as merry as if the story was already written. But you’ve left out one of the chief characters: Samwise the stouthearted. ‘I want to hear more about Sam, dad. Why didn’t they put in more of his talk, dad? That’s what I like, it makes me laugh. And Frodo wouldn’t have got far without Sam, would he, dad?’”

“Now, Mr. Frodo,” said Sam, “you shouldn’t make fun. I was serious.”

“So was I,” said Frodo, “and so I am.”

If there was a friendship ever written in tales, Frodo and Sam's are the truest and worthwhile to be told by the fireside. Maybe one day, when my hair turns white I shall sit in a rocking chair and gather little ones around me, and begin one of my favourite stories of friendship.

"Dear little children, once in a far away green land, there were hobbits named Frodo and Sam. Would you like to know what hobbits are? Well, hobbits are…"

And the road goes ever on...

Chills run down my spine
as our fingers entwine
and your sighs harmonize with mine...

I went to see Owl City concert last Wednesday. Apparently, I still haven't gotten over the moment when Adam sang If My Heart Was A House. When I become less busy maybe I'll write about what happened that night, especially on how I met one of my heroes.

Rain & Stupidity

You've seen it movies. You've seen it in dramas. You've read it in books. You've heard it in songs.

You've surely heard the beauty, poetry, and romance of getting drenched in rain. How you dreamt of running off in the rain to know the beauty of rainfalls for yourself!

There is nothing wrong at all in trying out such fantasies but do keep your senses intact with you. Remember that there is a line that divides reality and fantasy. If you are like me, we would wish and echo Anne Shirley's exclamation, "How lovely it must be to be living in a storybook!"

While rain may be cold and beautiful there is always a hefty chance of acquiring fever.

I am a big fan of rains and running under rain showers. I rejoice when it rains. But last Saturday, I left my senses somewhere. After running around in the rain I dismissed taking a (most important) bathroom shower when I got home. The next day, I received the reward of my romanticism: fever.

For rain fans, get drenched in rain shower all you want but don't ever ever ever ever ever miss the most important shower after your rain shower: bathroom shower.

A Picture of Your Favorite Night: Super Junior Super Show 3

Of all the concerts I've attended this is one of the most unique and interactive of its kind. The concerts that I've attended from childhood were all choral concerts. Now, I don't have anything against choral concerts. I love choirs. But in terms of interaction and audience response to performers, Super Show 3 is yet flowing with 100% support from fans. Other than Super Junior, it was the fans who immensely surprised me that night. It was a two-way performance last February. Super Junior performing for fans and fans performing their gifts and fanchants for Super Junior. The photo above was the view from where I sat in Araneta Coliseum. Everytime I see this kind of Sapphire Blue Sea, I can't help but think of the hardships Super Junior has been through and how unassuming they are still even if they've got so much fame.

Picture Challenge #3

A picture of the cast from your favorite show: My Girlfriend Is A Gumiho.

Front row: Dae Woong, Miho, Eun Hae In. Back row: Byung-soo, Seo Nyeo.
I can't find a photo with Park Dong Ju so I just pinned him to this happy photo of other cast. =)

I am not a television buff but as often with Korean dramas, I stream online to watch when I have time.  As you would have known, if you've been reading my blog, that I'm a fan of Korean dramas. But I can't put the cast photos of all my favorite dramas since only one picture is allowed. This is what I'll do anyway... I'll list them.

Endless Love I: Autumn In My Heart
Endless Love II: Winter Sonata
Endless Love III: Summer Scent
Endless Love IV: Spring Waltz
Dae Jang Geum
Jumong
Hwang Jini
My Girlfriend Is A Gumiho
Full House
Baker King: Kim Tak Gu

I picked My Girlfriend Is A Gumiho since it's the last drama I watched that I really liked. Okay, okay, I did not watch it on tv but it still counts as tv show since it was aired on tv in Korea.

My Girlfriend Is A Gumiho may have been done in simple drama shoots but the story was weaved carefully that the beginning fits the end and the end fits the beginning. It's such a sweet and innocent tale  with great music always playing in the background--which some of the cast contributed to by performing some songs.

This is a picture challenge but I think I am allowed to add a video anyway. Below is a montage of My Girlfriend Is A Gumiho to its main theme, Fox Rain by Lee Sun Hee.

Oh yeah, today, exactly a year ago was when My Girlfriend Is A Gumiho first aired in Korea. Also, watch out for Alyssa's blog about one of the main characters, Dae Woong. I can't wait to read what you will write Alyssa. Yes, this is a heads-up amidst your busy schedule.

Of Porcupines and Friends

Beware of your friends;
do not trust your brothers.
For every brother is a deceiver,
and every friend is a slanderer.

Friend deceives friend,
and no one speaks the truth.
They have taught their tongues to lie;
they weary themselves with sinning.

You live in the midst of deception;
In their deceit they refuse to acknowledge me,"
declares the Lord.

-Jeremiah 9:4-6

How long should you go on trusting a friend if that friend keeps on hurting you? A friend's friend's friend answered, "It's like porcupine. You don't know that it will sting you yet so you go near and try to touch it. Once it stings and you feel the pain, for sure, you aren't going to let it happen again."

Trust is a sacred thing. It doesn't mean you should not trust anymore but rather, practice caution in trusting. In the end, there is no one in this world that we can trust fully. Yes, you can't trust me a lot too. I will fail, you will fail, we all fail. If there is one person whom your whole trust must be anchored, it must be on God alone.

It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man. -Psalm 118:8

God is our refuge and strength,
an ever-present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way
and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,
though its waters roar and foam
and the mountains quake with their surging.

-Psalm 46:1-3

Take Advantage of the Rain

Rain was constant daily for the past week and so last Sunday when we were hanging around church I decided take some photos of people in the rain. Most of them though are of Jemi.

Tanya just wanted to stand in the rain with her umbrella. She stood there maybe for some time.

1940s. Didn't really like how it grained.

Then here are my two personal favorites:

Choreographies

Choreography, according to Wikipedia, is the art of designing sequences of movements in which motion, form, or both are specified.

Though I don't dance, I deeply appreciate dance choreography, particularly that of my favorite group, Super Junior. Ignoring the reasons people presume of girls liking a boy group (e.g. looks and voices), I was particularly drawn by their discipline in learning and executing their choreographies. They're not artists famed for looks but--in my opinion--by their excellent work of art in dancing. I'd say the definition give by Wikipedia aptly describes them or even more. The chief of dancing in the group, EunHyuk, is one of the gag men among them but when it comes to dancing, man, you just don't joke around about it.

Without fail, they got me hooked again in one of their latest dance choreography to their Chinese song Perfection.

They also made a tutorial of their dance but so far, I didn't learn anything from it. Not because it's a bad tutorial... it's simply because I can't dance. ='(

My other favorite dance choreographies of them:

I wonder when I will ever learn how to dance...

Roses Are Red, Roses Are Red

I am not fond of Photoshop but I do like taking photos. And I'm glad that photography has nothing to do with Photoshop at all, unless of course you choose to edit extensively for other purposes. What I want in photography is to retain as much originality as possible the moment something is captured.

Walter Blythe is my new friend, his mother Anne Shirley-Blythe, being my friend too, has to rest for the past year. Two years ago, I was supposed to make a new blog with my photo practices in it but haven't had the time to update it so it remained private. It's been more than a year since I last took photos and I'm trying to remember basic photography guidelines Lente taught me. Maybe I will begin practicing with still photos first since that's the easiest. For composition, lighting and other technicalities, I will have to depend on my instinct for the meantime and corrections from Ate Ree. Roses were the only outstanding subjects Walter and I found at church yesterday so we took advantage of it.

Picture Challenge #2

With the time gap in between my first picture challenge and this one, I can estimate that I will finish the Picture Challenge in 10 years. This picture challenge is rather well... challenging. How blatantly redundant.

Picture Challenge#2

A Picture of You and the Person You Have Been Closest With the Longest

Me and my sister texting each other in the airport.

The Rest of It

Well, here goes the rest of the photos of my Cebu trip, Malapascua island specifically. My cousins planned of this trip while I was hidden in the mountains with Alyssa. As Alyssa was preparing for her trip back to Manila, we spirited away in a bus at two in the morning and arrived at 7am in a small downtrodden port where we boarded a fishing boat to get to the island.

Malapascua is a small island at the the north tip of Cebu infested by thresher sharks--a diver's haven. We all got burned in the sun after swimming in deep sea (more of floating in my case in a life jacket), snorkeling to see a creepy-who-knows-what's-in-there Japanese World War II ship, getting splashed with Gatorade-blue waves, avoiding collision with rocks, and of course the best part was holding a staring contest with a stone fish in the coral garden.

After the afternoon sea adventure, some of my cousins wanted to walk by the shores. I insisted on staying in the west shores of the island to see the sunset. They did give way and allowed me to see the sun in it's fiery red state then prodded me that we should move on. I adamantly put my foot on the ground of I-don't-care-if-you-go-to-the-other-side-of-the-island but I must see the sunset: the complete concerto of a fireball vanishing in the horizon.

We spent the night taken aback by the diamond-studded sky and slept early in the morning to wake up early. This time we waded sea water praying that we'll be safe from sea urchins. And since I was afraid that a sea urchin will cripple me for the rest of the day, I built sand towers. And the rest of the day was spent glimpsing other parts of the island, getting at the foot of the lighthouse by riding a motorcycle through very narrow paths. I failed to suppress a scream as the motorcycle went downhill. Enough of talking, here are some of the pictures in random order:

Private resort, but the seas aren't private.

Oh yeah, I love my cousins for planning this getaway! Didn't expect it in a ministry trip. But what's unexpected is often more appreciated and more rejoiced in.

"The world under the sea declare the glory of God;
the corals proclaim the work of his hands
Day after day sea creatures pour forth praise
Night after night they reveal his knowledge."
