Doulos Chronicles

It's really a tough job keeping a blog if you have ten things to juggle in your hand. Anyway, this is a very late post. I wrote this down long ago so i might as well post it. ^_^

December 4, 2007 Tuesday
Our professor for Laws Affecting Mass Media confined himself to the hospital so my class is still looking for a professor to replace him. Since we did not have classes for the rest of the day, I told my classmate Rhea that I’d be going to Doulos. Her mind was made up that she will not go with me but after some moments of persuasion, she agreed to go with me. After telling some more classmates about Doulos, I had two more for company, so we had four for a company.

The ride to the South Harbor wasn’t long or perhaps I was just oblivious to it because of my longing to see Doulos. It’s been eleven months when 2007 began with Doulos berthed in Manila and now 2007 is ending Doulos is again berthed where I first saw it. I led my company in the long walk from the South Harbor Gate to Pier 13.

Doulos was docked handsomely in Pier 13 with its peaceful blue and white color. There it was docked like it never left the bay at all last January. The gangways were in the same position as I found it eleven months ago. I sadly left Doulos last January knowing that it might be years again before I see it. But now that it’s here and barely even a year has passed, a deep and still sadness sprang from my heart. It’s Doulos’ last visit to Manila and to the Philippines as a whole. When she leaves Subic on January, she will never come back to our shores. On 2010 she will have to retire after 96 years of life on sea.

I paid the entrance fee, got the tickets for my troop and chatted a bit with the crew assigned in the ticket booth. After showing the ticket to the ticket-taker, I took the position of a tour guide to my classmates. Something I love doing in places I love such as Doulos. ^_^ I just toured them around the bookshop and the bargain section since I do not have the right to tour them myself around the ship. If I were a crew in Doulos I would. ^_^

After entering the bookshop I left my classmates at liberty to go around and explore the books in the bookshop. I prefer visiting Doulos on weekdays because there aren’t many people and the crew would have more time to chat with people who ask lot of questions like me. ^_^

My classmates just canvassed the prices of the books and other items they want to buy since they decided to return next week. I bought myself Out of the Comfort Zone by George Verwer and strawberry ice cream in the Doulos Ice Cream parlor. Too bad they don’t have chocolate. I like it mixed with vanilla. Well, most probably my classmates will starve themselves for a week to save up for the list of items they want to buy. ^_^ Anyhow, seeing my classmates enjoying the books in Doulos made me glad and excited to bring them again to the ship next week.

Hahaha! Yes, I mean something else. The ship wasn't the only one who docked "hansomely."
