Happy birthday!
This is the most awkward greeting that I am compelled to craftily dodge every year. I appreciate the greeting but what do you exactly mean by it?
Do you wish me a happy birthday, or do you mean that it’s a happy day whether that is true or not? Or do you mean that it’s a day for me to be happy whether I like it or not? Or do you mean that you own a preconceived notion that I will hold a banquet for you to be happy on? Or you merely want to be courteously different today by replacing hello and how are you?
